Today marks the last day on the build in Las Cruces. It has been an incredible team of 19 hardworking and dedicated folks, many of them long term Habitatfolks. On one side of Herbie is a couple from Penn, he is 81, she is 79 and they can set the fast pace for the group.
On the other side is a sweet couple, celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and Marta got to enjoy her 75th birthday here on site. Hard to keep up to them as well.
Two young women on the team are recent widows and have towed their homes, one from Montana and the other from Washington State. I was so impressed when this tiny little Kim K sized person jumped out of her big Dodge diesel to check where her new Airstream would be parked. She has been on the chop saw at the work site for the last two weeks
The other 13 of us are similar ages with similar backgrounds, the guys all carpenters and some of them mechanics as well.
Last night the entertainment was provided by three guys who took Herbie apart to change the spark plugs. When I got home from my walk, I was somewhat surprised to find my passenger seat sitting outside. Apparently the GM setup makes it nearly impossible to find those 8 little essential firing things. When all was said and done, it was discovered that we were operating on the original plugs with 180,000 kms on them and they were in very sad shape , taking them to our trusty mechanic at home and wondering why not part of regular maintenance. No, we do not wonder, we know why not! It is a time consuming, take apart the inside front end! What happened to the days when you simply popped the hood and changed the plugs? Anyhow, fun was had by all and then celebrated with a great happy hour, great wine, great food.
We all go our seperate ways Sunday morning, Dave and I to Faywood Hot Springs with eight natural hot springs, a 24 hour pool and a campsite. Two days later we start our next build in Silver City
