Quito, Ecuador

After a night flight to Lima, Peru and a connector to Quito, we are being spoiled for Valentines day in the Hilton, Colon.

We loved the one hour ride in from the airport, talking the whole time in Spanish to the porter from G Adventures who picked us up.
The landscape is incredible!! Green mountainsides and lots of crops growing.
Opportunity to purchase these delights at stop lights through town, one American dollar for any of the following:  25 roses, a bag of lemons, limes, avacadoes etc etc

Drove through Tambuca and Cumbaya before hitting the city of 2 million.

Now on the tenth floor of the Hilton, overlooking a two block city park and what reminds me in the distance of the hills/mountains of Austria.

The mercado is in the next block and on Saturday, we shared family day in the huge park with many artisans and entertainers.
Will do comments on photos next week
On the way in from the airport, a 40 minute ride from the lovely new airport, much safer than the old one closer to town between two mountains.

The park from our  hotel room

Ceramics a big industry here

Everything is on a hill!!

Shopping fun...alpaca scarves and blankets, blue footed boobies, leather belts, jewelry

A little crowded on the local buses, I saw one poor child with his cheek squished up against a window.

Newer part of town

Jorge=George!

One of the older homes, Spanish influence.

Inside a souvenir shop

25 roses for $1. Even though it was Valentines day, we chose chocolate instead!

Would love to take one of these paintings home.

Entertainment in the park all day Saturday

Whew! It is hotter than we planned, once the morning fog lifts

Wonderful park

Family day

Barbequed plantain

Honey nuguat

Slap boxing

Great fun for kids, and some adults.....buzzing around the park

Now that is a hot dog!

Little one was restless while Mom worked her booth, so a couple gentle pats on the back did the trick!

No, not about to brake dance with these guys!

Relief painting, this photo does not do it justice.

Stay tuned for Quito part 2 as we have a week here after our Galapagos excursion.
