Still loving Silver City

March 10,2013

From my favorite coffee shop Javalina.
I added these photos later and  they are not in the order of the journal
Vickis, where Michelle took Dave and I  for lunch lst Wednesday after we had completely cleaned out and organized the equipment trailer.
this place has a full size ballroom and reception hall in the back. The food is great!

Waiting for my parcel from Las Cruces

The Silver City Museum, which originally was the home of a bank and mine owner, has been a police station as well

Tiles are made here and used in so many ways! High sidewalks due to monsoon rains

at the Buckhorn Saloon , built in 1803, for dinner with Michelle and Tom

Now that is a lot of bellows!

Original bar and cash register

More of the original buildings in Pinos Altos

yes it snowed last night!!!!! a bit of a surprise for us.

More tile work

Typical adobe home and shop combo

We were spending time in the museum, lovely  but Dave reads every word on every sign so I chose a latte and some journal time once I got the "past" picture of this lovely area.

This is indeed a cool place, named one of the top ten best small towns in the US, that covers all the reports, one saying it is number one, another saying it is number two. For a town of 11,000 people, they sure have all angles covered.

We are impressed with the eclectic combination of artists, writers, shop keepers, university students, miners and ranchers. And you can find a representative from each group at Javalinas Coffee Shop, Jalisco  Restaurant, Diane's Eatery and Bake Shop,Vicki's European Fare, all housed in 1800 buildings in Historic Downtown. Can't believe we have experienced them all in such a short time but our building coordinator treated us to Vicki's and the volunteer painter invited us to Diane's to hear him play music with two of his friends.  Both places were packed, again with the great mix of folks.

My other favorite spots are the Silver City Food Coop, all organic; the Yada Yada Wool Shop, one of the best I have visited; and the Town Quilt Shop.
All these places I have mentioned are within walking distance of Herbie, who is parked at the building site.
At this point, I should probably not take those afternoon strolls anymore! Probably getting close to my limit for the border crossing!

At 5800 foot elevation, the air is crisp and refreshing. The locals are active outdoor people, enjoying their 360 days of sunshine a year. Three bike shops promote the trails and have created bike lanes on the highways and streets.
Being so close to the 2.5 million acre Gila National Forest, hiking is a big thing as well as horse trails. Ranches are various size son the hillsides, the one we were invited to is up at the Continental Divide in Piños Altos (tall pines). Two very gentle horses greeted me and loved having their noses rubbed.
From the altitude, 7080 feet, we had a clear view of Tres Hermans (three sisters) mountains across the Mexican border, 100 miles away. And this was looking over the tops of those tall pines.

A special treat  last evening was dinner with Michelle and Tom at the Buckhorn Saloon in Piños Altos. Built in 1803, at the height of the silver mines, it has the original bar, fireplace and furnishings, you can choose the informal dining area or the very formal part. Attached is the original opera house as well. So neat, just standing below the box seats and looking at the stage, expecting the can can girls to enter at any moment.

Eight servers and five chefs for the Saturday night live music full house, in spite of snow on the ground and the threat of black ice. The windy steep road seemed fine on the way up in daylight but needless to  say, Herbie poked all the way down.
The menu is definitely a drawing card, from the green chile cheese buffalo burgers in the saloon to the prime rib in the dining room and a lot of local specialities... Gila Monster eggs, Louies special dressings, chile flavored you name it.

Back to the Habitat build.... Windows and doors this week, hardy plank siding and
plumbing roughed in. Will be a busy week and we have a reward at the end! A weekend at Faywood Hot Springs, camping on site and one pool is open 24 hours. I will know wherero find Dave if he goes missing!

Pura vida
