Aug 28 Montmatre, Notre Dame and Latin Quarter
Montmatre Walking Tour for the 28th
Left much earlier this morning to beat the heat bit it turned out to be only 29 degrees and often with a cloud cover, perfect day for walking tours.
Found that our planned metro stop at Chateau Rouge was closed so went on to Marcadet Poissioniere and walked back to the steps that led to Sacre Coeur. Listened to some locals practising an African version of Halle and walked into the church, then around the walking tour recommended in Lonely Planet, found le musee de Monmatre, Van Gogh's time line and art, the two windmills connected to Renoir, lots of shops and cafes, stopped at Paul for the morning croissant and espresso, then carried on down the hill to Moulin Rouges. Relived the live show we experienced twenty years ago then caught the Metro to Cite,
taking in Notre Dame, the Seine, Latin Quarter and an
awesome lunch in the park St Julien le Pauvre where the oldest inhabitant is protected and propped, an acacia planted in 1602 by Robiner and given that nickname.
Dave head to the Deportation Memorial and I head to the Left Bank Booksellers. Interesting find, Shakespeare and Company opened by Sylvia Beach for post WwI Lost Generation. With cheap rent and free flowing booze, she housed Ernest Hemmingway, James Joyce,Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. She published Ulysses for Joyce.
Circled back to the metro by way of Sainte-Chapelle, France Supreme Court building, Place St.Michel but unfortunately missed the Conciergerie, the gloomy prison famous for 2780 victims of the guillotine, Marie-Antionette being one of them!
Metro home for happy hour, quick shower then out for dinner in our neighborhood, Le Marais
